Making soap

Chemistry in everyday life

Students in 2ESO have been learning about elements, compounds and mixtures.  They have created models with help of marshmallows, toothpicks and colours.

They represented the chemical bonds with toothpicks and the different types of atoms with marshmallows. It was a visual way to see how they work together and how materials are composed.

Students took it a step further and they enquired about chemical changes. They took the opportunity to create a chemical reaction between recycled kitchen oil and caustic soda in order to make soap.

After one day the soaps had already solidified and we could cut it into bars.  Then we need some weeks of maturation and the soaps will be ready to use. In this process, students have learned that dirty oil should never been thrown away as it can be given a second use, for instance by turning it into soaps.
